Your Body Can Speak

More ways to actively listen is to be mindful of your body.

Your Handshake

Firm and decisive but not too long.

Your Facial Expression:

Attempt to keep all facial muscles relaxed. Avoid tightening your jaw, clenching your teeth and fidgety movements. It is recommended the facial expression reflect the feeling you wish to communicate.

Eye Contact

Focus softly on the speaker and shift your gaze occasionally.

This expresses an interest and desire to listen.

You may have to look at the person’s face before you feel comfortable with eye contact.

Non- distracting Environment

Cut the environmental distractions to a minimum.

Turn off the TV, radio, close the doors, etc.
